Periods of Chinese History
Although objects produced and crafted in the neolithic age are in first case tools for daily use, the simple fact that there exist decoration with which the pottery vessels or the jade tools were ornated show that mankind has a natural inclination to art if there is time enough and if there are people specialized in the technique of decoration.|
The oldest traces of neolithic art can be found on the pottery of the Yangshao culture 仰韶 with their reddish background and white-black patterns. These patterns had geometric forms like scrolls, slips, triangles, pointed bands and circles and even chess-board squares, but also stylised animals and human or superhuman persons.
