The Four Categories of Literature
Xinjiang waifan jilüe 新疆外藩紀略 "Military history of the outer barbarian regions of the New Territories in the West" is a description of the "new borderlands" (Xinjiang 新疆) written by a Qing period 清 (1644-1911) author called Chunyuan shi 椿園氏 "Master of the Mahogany Garden". This person had traveled a lot through whole China and wrote this 2 juan "scrolls" long book on the base of his own experience. It was finished in 1773. The first juan is a detailed description of all important cities in Xinjiang and their history, both the Tarim Basin and Dzungharia. The second juan describes the conquest of the region by the Qing armies and their victories over the Dzunghars Amursana and the Muslim khoja Burhān ad-Dīn. It also described the customs and habits of the Uyghurs and the new form of administration imposed by the Qing government.
