The short Pinghai jilüe 平海紀略 "Military history of the pacification of the sea" is a history of the war against pirates in 1809 compiled under the supervision of Wen Chengzhi 溫承志. It narrates how governor-general Beling 百齡 (1748-1816) fought against the pirate commanders Li Shangqing 李尚清, Liang Bao 梁保, Wu Zhiqing 吳知青, Guo Xuexian 郭學顯, Zhang Bao 張保 and Mai Youjin 麥有金 that controlled the South China sea at the end of the 18th century. With much elan, Bailing had built war fregates, cast cannons and haunted the pirates so that within only one month the whole coastline could be cleared. For his commitment he was invited for a triumphal welcome in Beijing in 1809.
