The Four Categories of Literature
Zheng Mian jilüe 征緬紀略 "Military annals of the campaigns against Burma" is an inofficial history of the war of the Qing dynasty 清 (1644-1911) against Burma during the late 1760s. The 2 juan "scrolls" long book was compiled by Wang Chang 王昶 (1725-1806). Wang took part the Burma campaigns and the Second Jinchuan War of 1771-1776. He is known for his inclination towards literary acitivites and wrote a lot of essays and poems. He also took part in the compilation of the imperial geography Da-Qing yitong zhi 大清一統志 and the political encyclopedias Santong 三通. For his book about the Burma campaigns, Wang Chang made use of Wu Kai's 吳楷 Zheng Mian jilüe 征緬紀略. He abridged the text, added his own experiences and provided a more narrative description of the campaigns than Wu, resulting in a kind of diary, enriched with some poems. He wrote also a similar text about the Jinchuan war, the Shujiao jiwen 蜀徼紀聞. Wang Chang's Zhengmian jilüe is included in the collectaneum Zhaodai congshu 昭代叢書.
