The Four Categories of Literature
Zhu ruxue an 諸儒學案 "Annals of the various Confucians" is a collection of the most important teachings of Song 宋 (960-1279) and Ming 明 (1368-1644) period Neo-Confucian philosophers. The 8 juan "scrolls" long book was written by the Ming period scholar Liu Yuanqing 劉元卿 (1544-1609), courtesy name Liu Diaofu 劉調父, style Xuanzi 旋字 or Luxiao 瀘瀟. He came from Anfu 安福, Jiangxi and was a professor (boshi 博士 "erudite") in the Directorate of Education (guozijian 國子) and scribe (zhushi 主事) in the Ministry of Rites (libu 禮部). He has written the Liu Pin junzhu ji 劉聘君主集, Shanjucao 山居草, Huanshan xucao 還山續草, Siwenbian 思問編, Lilü leiyao 禮律類要, Daxiangguan 大象觀 and Daxue xinbian 大學新編.
The Zhu ruxue an includes the most important sayings (yulu 語錄) of the philosophers Zhou Dunyi 周敦頤, Cheng Hao 程顥, Cheng Yi 程頤, Zhang Zai 張載, Shao Yong 邵雍, Xie Liangzuo 謝良佐, Yang Shi 楊時, Luo Congyan 羅從彥, Li Tong 李侗, Zhu Xi 朱熹, Lu Jiuyuan 陸九淵, Yang Jian 楊簡, Jin Lüxiang 金履祥, Xu Qian 許謙, Xue Xuan 薛瑄, Hu Juren 胡居仁, Chen Xianzhang 陳獻章, Luo Xinshun 羅欽順, Wang Shouren 王守仁 (Wang Yangming 王陽明), Wang Gen 王艮, Chu Shouyi 鄒守益, Wang Ji 王畿, Ouyang De 歐陽德, Luo Hongxian 羅洪先, Hu Zhi 胡直 and Luo Rufang 羅汝芳. These quotations are enriched by a commentary written by Liu's disciple Geng Dingxiang 耿定向.
