Xu zizhi tongjian changbian shibu 續資治通鑑長編拾補

Xu zizhi tongjian changbian shibu 續資治通鑑長編拾補 is a chronicle compiled by a team under the guidance of Huang Yizhou 黄以周 (1828-1899) and Qin Xiangye 秦緗業 (1813—1883). Huang Yizhou, courtesy name Yuantong 元同, style Jingji 儆季, hailed from Dinghai 定海, Zhejiang. He wrote some philosophical studies like Lishu tonggu 禮書通故, Jingxun biyi 經訓比義, Jingshuo 經說, Zisizi jijie 子思子輯解, and Junli sima fa 軍禮司馬法 on the equal-field system. His collected works are called Jingji zazhu 儆季雜著. Qin Xiangye, courtesy name Yinghua 應華, style Danru 淡如, hailed from Wuxi 無錫, Jiangsu. He wrote the history books Ping Zhe jilüe 平浙紀略, Zhejiang zhongyi lu 浙江忠義錄 and Wuxi jingui xian zhi 無錫金匮縣志. Important collections of his are Hongqiao Laowu yigao 虹橋老屋遺稿, Xiling chouchang ji 西冷酬唱集, and Xiling xiaohan ji 西冷肖寒集.

The book of 60 juan length is a supplement to Li Tao's 李燾 (1115–1184) Xu zizhi tongjian changbian 續資治通鑑長編, adding information to this book. The main sources for Huang's book were Xu zizhi tongjian changbian jishi benmo 續資治通鑑長編紀事本末 by Yang Zhongliang 楊仲良 (fl. 1200) and Xu Song biannian zizhi tongjian 續宋編年資治通鑑 by Liu Shiju 劉時舉 (fl. 1244). Yet Huang and his colleagues made also use of further sources of all types, including brush-notes-style writings (biji 筆記), private chronicles and biographies, or imperial edicts. The compilers made critical use of these sources to add information wherever deemed necessary, but without diving too much in details. The critical commentaries were compiled by Wang Yishou 王詒壽 (1830–1881). Huang's chronicle covers the time period from 1067 to 1127.

The book was first published by Qin Xiangye in 1883 by the Zhejiang Shuju 浙江書局 with the title Xu tongjian changbian shibu 續通鑑長編史補. A modern edition, using the original title of Huang, was published in 2006 by the Shanghai Guji Press 上海古籍出版社, and another one in 2004 by the Zhonghua Shuju 中華書局.
