Baitian zazhu 白田雜著 "Miscellaneous notes of Master Bare Field" is a "brush-notes"-style book (biji 筆記) written during the Qing period by Wang Maohong 王懋竑 (1668-1741), courtesy name Yuzhong 予中, style Baitian 白田, who is also known for his annalistic biography Zhuzi nianpu 朱子年譜.
The book of 8 juan length examines and debates various subjects in other writings. Chapters such as the "Research on the family rites as discussed in the nine diagrams on the original meaning of the Book of Changes" Yi benyi jiu tu lun jiali kao 易本義九圖論家禮考 reflect meticulous research, thorough comparative analysis, and precise, innovative arguments that explore ideas not previously addressed by earlier scholars. The book employs historical cross-referencing, supplements omissions, verifies dates, distinguishes variations, and evaluates arguments to substantiate historical texts.
In 1747, Ji Rongshu 紀容舒 (1685-1764) wrote a colophon for the book, stating that it was copied from the household of Shen Yi 申翊 in Jingzhou 景州. However, it was unclear whether Wang Maohong himself had compiled it or if Shen Yi had selected and recorded the works. Wang's collected works, Baitian Caotang quanji 白田草堂全集, include the entire text of the Baitian zalu. Still, as it contained numerous social and occasional writings, it lacked the depth and rigor of the original book's textual studies.
The text is included in the series Siku quanshu 四庫全書.
