Yuguang jianqi ji 玉光劍氣集 "Collected jade radiance and sword energy" is a collection of stories by Zhang Yi 張怡 (1608–1695), courtesy name Yaoxing 瑤星, style Wei'an 薇庵 or Baiyun Xiansheng 白雲先生, a native of Shangyuan 上元 (today part of Nanjing, Jiangsu). He was a Ming loyalist who lived through the transition to the Qing dynasty 清 (1644-1911). After the fall of the Ming 明 (1368-1644), Zhang Yi withdrew into seclusion at Baiyun Temple 白雲觀 on Mount Sheshan 攝山 (Mt. Qixia 棲霞山, Jiangsu), where he devoted himself to writing for personal fulfilment.
The experience of this dynastic change is reflected in the book. It is divided into thirty-one chapters covering themes such as imperial governance, political and military strategies, and the deeds and discourses of ministers. Much of the material is drawn from official histories and personal observations, and it includes annotations by scholars such as Huang Yuji 黃虞稷 (1629-1691). The work provides particularly detailed accounts of late Ming political upheavals, especially the political crisis of 1644 (in Chinese dubbed Jiashen zhi bian 甲申之變, see calendar). An important source of the book's historical material lies in the firsthand experiences and observations of Zhang Yi and his associates. Because much of this information is rarely recorded in other works and derives from direct experience, it is detailed, reliable, and of considerable historical value.
In terms of historical interpretation, Zhang Yi upheld a strong ideal of loyalty and righteousness, while also advancing his own distinctive political insights and maintaining a fair and balanced approach to evaluating history.
Because the original manuscript underwent multiple revisions, resulting in disordered volumes, the modern editors standardised punctuation, paragraphing, and the table of contents, reorganised the text into thirty-one volumes, and added biographical materials at the beginning.
The book preserves valuable historical sources on topics such as the Maritime Trade Superintendency (shibosi 市舶司) system and the rebellion of Kong Youde (孔有德, d. 1552), while also including anecdotal and legendary accounts, such as those of the "Daoist of the Gourd" (Yipiao Daoren 一瓢道人). Some passages remain uncertain due to illegible manuscript handwriting and are marked with brackets.
The work appears in Xie Guozhen's 謝國楨 (1901-1982) book catalogue Zengding wan-Ming shiji kao 增訂晚明史籍考. In his modern collation, Xie undertook several major tasks, including punctuating the entire text, dividing it into paragraphs, reorganising the chapters, and compiling a new table of contents. In the original manuscript, the fascicle divisions had been repeatedly altered by the author through erasures and revisions, yet they still failed to form a coherent sequence. The table of contents originally prepared by Wang Wentao 王文燾 at the beginning of the manuscript was likewise disordered, with duplications and omissions. The text was published in 2006 by Zhonghua Book Company 中華書局 as part of the series Yuan-Ming shiliao biji congkan 元明史料筆記叢刊.
A manuscript copy in Zhang Yi's own hand is preserved by the Shanghai Library 上海圖書館. Written in running script with brush and ink, the calligraphy is vigorous and elegant, and the manuscript has been collated and studied by later scholars.
