Xiyinxuan congshu 惜陰軒叢書 "Collectaneum of the Cherishing Time Studio"

The Xiyinxuan congshu 惜陰軒叢書 "Collectaneum of the Cherishing Time Studio" is a collectaneum compiled by the Qing period 清 (1644-1911) scholar Li Xiling 李錫齡. It includes 35 books with a total length of 324 juan "scrolls". Li Xiling, courtesy name Li Mengxi 李孟熙, came from Sanyuan 三原, Shaanxi, and was a minor official in the imperial secretariat during the Daoguang reign 道光 (1821-1850). The name of the collectaneum is derived from the name of Li' study, where he harboured more than 90,000 volumes of books. The collectaneum includes mainly rare books that are hardly to be found in other libraries or publications. It focuses on explanations of the Confucian Classics, bronze and stone inscriptions, and medical texts. Li Xiling died before the collection was published, so that the editing had to be taken over by his cousin Zhang Shu 張樹. The collection is structured according to the four traditional literary categories, and the texts are arranged in 16 book cases (han 函). It is very important because of the rare texts it includes, but also because it contains some versions that differ from those adopted for the imperial collectaneum Siku quanshu 四庫全書. Some editions of the Xiyinxuan congshu are of lower quality, but it is important that they have survived. It was published in 1846 and was reprinted in 1858 and then in 1896.
