Hanshan zhoutan 寒山帚談 "Discussions of Cold Mountain [as valuable as] a broom [at hand]" is a book on calligraphy written during the Ming period 明 (1368-1644) by Zhao Huanguang 趙宦光 (1559-1625), courtesy name Fanfu 凡夫 or Shuichen 水臣, style Guangping 廣平, from Taicang 太倉, Zhili 直隸 (approx. present-day Hebei), who also wrote a commentary on the famous ancient dictionary, Shuowen changjian 說文長箋. Part of this book has found entrance in his Hanshan zhoutan.
The book consists of 2 juan, the first of which explains the origin of fifteen different styles of calligraphy (ch. Quanyu 權輿), the composition of Chinese characters (Getiao 格調), the training of writing (Lixue 力學), and the imitation of models (Linfang 臨仿). The second fascicle deals with writing materials (Yongcai 用材), the assessment of artistic quality (Pingjian 評鑒), model calligraphies (Fashu 法書), and the "formulas" of the old masters (Liaoyi 了義). The supplement of the book (Shiyi 拾遺) adds some further information. The appendix (Fulu 附錄), being an excerpt of the Shuowen changjian, discusses the most important terms of writing styles and of inscribed objects.
