Mochi xubian 墨池續編

Mochi xubian 墨池續編 is a book on calligraphy written as a continuation of Zhu Changwen's 朱長文 (1039-1098) Mochibian 墨池編 from the Song period 宋 (960-1279). The Xubian, with a length of 3 juan, was written during the Ming period 明 (1368-1644) by Li Qing 李苘 (1537-1586), courtesy name Zijin 子藎, style Huanzhou 環洲, from Shouguang 壽光, Shandong. Xue Chen 薛晨 wrote a commentary on it. The text was printed by the Yonghe Studio 永和堂 during the Jiajing reign-period 嘉靖 (1522-1566).

The first juan speaks about the origins of Chinese characters (Ziyuan 字原) and quotes from studies like Zhou Boqi's 周伯琦 (1298-1369) Shuowen ziyuan xu 說文字原敘, Zhao Guze's 趙古則 (1351-1395) Liushu benyi zixu 六書本義自序, and the texts Liushu zonglu 六書總論 and Liushu fenlun 六書分論. The second part offers "Formulas for the brush" (Bijue 筆訣). Li uses Sun Guoting's 孫過庭 (646-691) famous Shupu 書譜, Jiang Kui's 姜夔 (1161-1203?) Xu shupu 續書譜, Xie Jin's 解縉 (1369-1415) Shufa 書法, Wang Bin's 王賓 (fl. 1408) Xuzi 敘字, Zhu Yunming's 祝允明 (1461-1527) Shushu 書述, Feng Fang's 豐坊 (1492-1563) Bijue 筆訣, and Yan Zhenqing's 顏真卿 (709-785) version of Zhang Xu's 張旭 (c. 675-c. 750) Shi'er yi bifa ji 十二意筆法記. The last fascicle explains methods of rating artworks (Pinlun 品論), and for this purpose quotes from Emperor Gaozong's 宋高宗 (r. 1127-1162) Hanmozhi 翰墨志, Ouyang Xiu's 歐陽修 (1007-1072) Shibilu 試筆錄, Mi Fu's 米芾 (1051-1107) Shushi 書史 and Haiyue mingyan 海嶽名言, Huang Bosi's 黃伯思 (1079-1118) Fatie kanwu 法帖刊誤, Yang Shen's 楊慎 (1488-1559) Danqian zonglu 丹鉛總錄, and Wang Shizhen's 王世貞 (1526-1590) Yiyuan zhiyan 藝苑卮言
