Rangliguan guoyan lu 穰梨館過眼錄

Rangliguan guoyan lu 穰梨館過眼錄 "Viewing notes from the Hall of Abundant Pears" is a book on painting written during the late Qing period 清 (1644-1911) by Lu Xinyuan 陸心源 (1834-1894), courtesy name Gangfu 剛甫, style Cunzhai 存齋, from Gui'an 歸安, Zhejiang. He was a famous collector of artworks and compiler of the book catalogue Bisonglou cangshu zhi 皕宋樓藏書志 and the series Shiwanjuanlou congshu 十萬卷樓叢書. He also compiled the books Qianyuan zongji 潛園總集, Jinshilu bu 金石錄補 and Tangwen shiyi 唐文拾遺.

The art book, with a length of 40 juan, includes a continuation (Xulu 續錄) of 16 juan and was completed in 1891. It is part of the Qianyuan zongji, the collected works of Lu Xinyuan. The publication serves as a catalogue of calligraphy and paintings. Most of the works recorded are from the author's collection, while a few originate from other collectors or sources such as Gao Shiqi's 高士奇 (1645-1703) Jiangcun xiaoxia lu 江村銷夏錄, which also influenced the overall format of Lu's book.

It arranges, in chronological order, calligraphies and paintings from the Liang 梁 (502-557) to the Qing period. The total number of artworks described in the book and its continuation reaches 687. Overall, this book functions as a well-organised catalogue of calligraphy and painting. Many of the works included have survived to this day. Each entry provides details on the material, size, and includes recorded colophons and collectors' seals from various periods. For calligraphic works, the full text is transcribed for reference and study. The book holds significant historical value in its documentation of calligraphy and painting, offering reliable source material for art historians. However, because the author lacked expertise in calligraphy and painting, it contains no critical evaluations, discussions, or objective descriptions of the artworks’ visual aspects. This remains a shortcoming. Nevertheless, the book remains a valuable record of calligraphy and painting.
