Jiashi tanlu 賈氏談錄 (also written 賈氏譚錄) "Conversations with Master Jia" is a collection of stories written during the early Northern Song period 北宋 (960-1126) by Zhang Ji 張洎 (d. 996), courtesy name Shi'an 師黯 or Xieren 偕仁, from Quanjiao 全椒 (in today's Anhui province).
He first served under the Southern Tang dynasty 南唐 (937-975), holding positions such as drafter of imperial edicts (zhi zhigao 知制誥) and drafter in the Palace Secretariat (zhongshu sheren 中書舍人). After the foundation of the Song dynasty, he was a senior compiler in the Historiography Institute (shiguan xiuzhuan 史館修撰) and a Hanlin Academician (Hanlin xueshi 翰林學士). During the Chunhua reign-era 淳化 (990-994), he advanced to the role of Participant in Determining Governmental Matters (canzhi zhengshi 參知政事). Zhang Ji was recognised for his elegant literary style and extensive knowledge, particularly in Daoist and Buddhist texts.
The book of 1 juan was compiled when Zhang Ji was sent by Li Yu 李煜 (r. 961-975), emperor of the Southern Tang, as an envoy to the Song court. It records what he heard from Jia Huangzhong 賈黃中 (941-996), hence the book's title. Jia Huangzhong held the post of Left Rectifier of Omissions (zuo buque 左補闕) and was a descendant of Chief Counsellor Jia Dan 賈耽(730-805). He was fond of antiquity, widely learned, and skilled in conversation, with extensive knowledge of court institutions and traditions. Accordingly, the contents of this record consist entirely of anecdotal accounts from the late Tang period.
The original work has been lost. According to the book catalogue Junzhai dushu zhi 郡齋讀書志, it originally contained more than thirty chapters. However, the version preserved in Tao Zongyi's 陶宗儀 (1329-1410) series Shuofu 說郛 includes only nine items, and the version in Zeng Zao's 曾慥 Leishuo 類說 (early 12th cent.) only seventeen. Both versions were unfied in the Ming-period 明 (1368-1644) encyclopaedia Yongle dadian 永樂大典 (now lost). The text is also found in the series Siku quanshu 四庫全書, Tang-Song-Ming-Yuan xiaoshuo 唐宋元明小說, Shoushange congshu 守山閣叢書 and Guang sishi jia xiaoshuo 廣四十家小說.
